From fad diets to “skinny tea” and everything in between, there are a lot of myths about weight loss on the internet. How much is true?
MYTH: ALL CALORIES ARE CREATED EQUAL
You may have heard the simple advice, “calories in, calories out” in the weight loss community, suggesting if you consume fewer calories than you burn, you will lose weight. While this is generally true, it implies that all calories are created equal. The truth is different calories will have different effects on your weight loss journey. Hence, tracking macronutrients leads to improved weight loss goals and prove to be more palatable for the long haul. For example, choosing protein calories over carb calories is proven to boost your metabolism, reduce your appetite, and improve the performance of weight-regulating hormones. So, if you eat a 100-calorie snack of potato chips, you can easily burn off those 100 calories, but the calories you consumed may have a negative effect on your long-term weight loss goals. At Luke 1.3.7. Weight Loss Center, we will develop an individualized macronutrient eating plan to jump start your weight loss plan with continued adjustments as you reach your milestones. If you are interested in a delicious, affordable, customized macronutrient eating plan, just sign up for a virtual visit with Dr. Aros.
MYTH: WEIGHT LOSS IS ALL ABOUT WILLPOWER
One of the most damaging myths is the mindset that all it takes to lose weight is willpower. This myth ignores the many factors outside of willpower that can contribute to weight gain. Numerous genetic variables and medical conditions are known to contribute to weight gain. Additionally, those engaged in the obesity battle can often times lose weight with great ease, however, keeping it off is the ultimate challenge. So, the next time someone implies that you are weak and you need to stick to your program, look in the mirror and read your reflection journal and remind yourself that you are strong, successful, and tenacious.
MYTH: DIETING IS THE KEY TO LOSING
Diets work in theory, but in practice, they often fail. Meal planning (not a diet) is a lifetime possibility. As most “diets” are only sustainable for a finite period, hence, 80%of dieters gain back the weight they lost within a year.
It is not that diets cannot work. But they must be followed consistently and never given up, then, of course, you will lose weight. But changing your eating goals without changing anything else in your life just will not work. A better approach is to make an overall goal to maintain a state of wellness that encompasses the mind, body, and spirit.
MYTH: ALL PEOPLE WHO ARE OBESE ARE UNHEALTHY AND ALL THIN PEOPLE ARE HEALTHY
This is another very damaging myth that causes body image issues and unhealthy practices in both thin and obese individuals. Of course, obesity can lead to obstructive sleep apnea, diabetes, heart disease, strokes, and even increase your cancer risk. However, it is possible to be obese and be in good metabolic health. Additionally, plenty of thin people have these same illnesses.
